The Sunnmøre Alps are most famous for their mighty summits with dizzying views of the fjords, however the easier coastal hikes are also worth a visit.

Hiking offers in Ålesund and Sunnmøre

Hike and sail

Come along on a week-long adventure that combines hiking and sailing by the coast, fjords and islands around Ålesund and the Sunnmøre Alps.

A few highlights include a couple of days in the magnificent Hjørundfjord, a visit to a Norwegian farm, a day on the bird island of Runde, and a cruise around the fishing villages of the Herøy Municipality, including the island of Giske where many Vikings originated from. You will also get a chance to explore the historic town of Ålesund.

Your home during the trip will be on board the beautifully restored naval vessel Gassten, one of the last wooden Swedish navy ships ever built. The boat sleeps 10 people in a combination of double and twin berths.

Trek around the Hjørundfjord

Join Hvitserk on a week-long trek in magnificent scenery around one of Norway's most beautiful fjords.

We will go from village to village, making our way up summits and exploring valleys and destinations en route. Most of the week is done on foot, but occasionally we make our way around by taxi, ferry or shuttle boat. The highest point of the trip is the 1,564-metre-high Slogen, a classic summit in Sunnmøre. Accommodation is arranged in high-quality, charming hotels, including the charming design hotel Villa Norangdal and the beautiful Sagafjord Hotel in Sæbø.

If you want to experience the Norwegian mountain landscape at its best, this trip is an excellent option.

Hike the Sunnmøre Alps and stay at Hotel Union Øye

On this hike you will conquer the beautiful Slogen summit, one of the most cherished peaks in all of Norway.

Accommodation is arranged at the enchanting Hotel Union Øye, which is located right in Norway’s amazing fjord landscape with the Geirangerfjord, the Hjørundfjord and the Sunnmøre Alps within reach. Visit in the summer when you can enjoy daylight until midnight, giving you more time to explore the surroundings.

Price from NOK 1,585 per person including accommodation (double room), a three-course dinner in the hotel’s enchanting dining room, breakfast, a traditional Norwegian packed lunch, and a map.

Hiking to Mount Saksa

If you are looking for a hike with fjord panorama views out of this world, Mount Saksa is a safe bet. From the top, you can see all the way to the end of the Hjørundfjord in one direction and out to Ålesund in the other.

The hike starts in the small village of Urke, located by the Norangsfjord. From there you will work your way up, the views getting better and better throughout the day. The last part of the hike has been improved with a staircase built by sherpas from Nepal, using existing rocks.

Price from NOK 950 per person

Kayak and hike

For all you adventurers out there, here is a combined kayak and hiking tour to the mountain farm of Smoge overlooking the Sunnylvsfjord.

We start the day at 08.00 in Stranda, where you will be briefed about how to use the kayaks safely. After paddling along the steep mountain sides of the fjord, we park the kayaks by the shore and hike up the old trail to the farm, which has been in use since the Viking age. Over lunch, your guide will tell you lots of stories about the mountain farms. We return to Stranda around 17.00.

You have a good chance to see wildlife like eagles, porpoise and otters during the trip.

Price from NOK 1,300 per person

With rope and ice axe in the Sunnmøre Alps

Here's an action-packed panorama trip in the Sunnmøre Alps, crossing glaciers and conquering summits. The exact route will be decided along the way – perhaps you will ascend Slogen or hike from Sykkylven to Trandal, where you can continue across the fjord to Standal and then on to Kolåstinden or Molladalen.

The trip is led by mountain guides (IVBV/UIAGM/IFMGA) from Norgesguidene AS.

    Safety in the mountains

    Return to hike another day

Norway is an incredible place to explore, with untamed mythical landscapes, mountains, valleys, and fjords. Before you enter the outdoors, get familiar with the nine simple rules of the Norwegian mountain code to help you stay safe.

    1. Plan your trip and inform others about the route you have selected.
    2. Adapt the planned routes according to ability and conditions.
    3. Pay attention to the weather and the avalanche warnings.
    4. Be prepared for bad weather and frost, even on short trips.
    5. Bring the necessary equipment so you can help yourself and others.
    6. Choose safe routes. Recognize avalanche terrain and unsafe ice.
    7. Use a map and a compass. Always know where you are.
    8. Don’t be ashamed to turn around.
    9. Conserve your energy and seek shelter if necessary.

Read the mountain code with supplementary comments.
